About the Artist
I design and create one-of-a-kind wearable art that is organic and sculptural. My designs are inspired by nature, machinery and other forms of metalwork, both ancient and modern.
I have always been an artist – being creative and expressing myself through art is at the core of who I am. I took my first metalsmithing class while working full-time at The University of Texas School of Law. That experience nurtured an already strong interest in jewelry design and body adornment. I’ve been creating unique, sculptural jewelry out of metal ever since.
Growing up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains I developed a close connection to the natural world. This has resulted in my incorporation of various elements of nature in my designs by creating unique symbols of the natural world. This intimacy with my art is something I’ve not experienced in any other media and I enjoy sharing it with others.
Other artistic influences are related to my Anthropology degree and my fascination with other cultures. I incorporate universal cultural symbols in my jewelry – such as circles and swirls symbolizing life and continuity. A visit to the prehistoric site at Newgrange, Ireland years ago led to some of my most common swirl pattern designs. I would find myself doodling versions of ancient symbols, and today those doodles appear in many of my pieces. Exposure to other cultures is reflected in my creative process, resulting in a wide range of design and execution.
The process of creating jewelry with my hands enriches my everyday life in ways that words don’t adequately express. I know that making art is fundamental to who I am and what I am meant to do. I sincerely hope that each piece brings to others a measure of the joy I found in its creation.
